"Case of Dillas"

We are working really hard to update, rotate and circulate our food storage. We have food in the freezer that I don't even remember buying. So in an effort to Spring Clean we are in full empty the freezer mode. We warned the kids that they may not always like what we are eating for dinner, but we wouldn't feed them anything that we wouldn't eat ourselves. So last night was the first night of the freezer cleanse.

It was FHE, the kids had crazy homework and I had a new client meeting that I had to go to. So I did what I always, well sometimes, well most of the time do....pulled something out of the freezer, and not from the front of the freezer, but the WAY back. We feasted on shrimp stir fry with rice and chicken fajitas. Quick and easy. (Not two main courses that I would put together usually, but hey it was enough for our family of six. ) We had fruit and milk to round out our nutritious meal.

Two of our boys took one look and walked away. Nice. They missed out. It was really good. Why didn't I make this before? (Because corn dogs and mac and cheese always seem to win out in our home.) Then as we were calling the two boys to the table over and over without any response ,the older of the two noticed that shrimp was involved in this experiment. He sat right down and chowed down. The other one...no such luck. He didn't eat dinner at all last night. He didn't even care. He is going to get really hungry this next month or two.

So wish me luck...I know I can do it. I (we) may not always be happy with the outcome, but if I liked it enough to buy it a year ago...have my tastes really changed that much? The little one who wouldn't eat begged for a "case of dilla". Quesadilla (translated). I didn't budge. Do you feel that your kids HAVE to eat dinner? I don't let our children go without dinner ever as a punishment. But this wasn't a punishment. The good food was fixed, he just refused it. Did I do the right thing? Boy, he sure ate a great breakfast this morning. Turkey...I'll bet I can find some in the freezer for tonight's dinner.

I can hear your voice saying "Turkey"! It's so you!
You absolutely did the right thing. He was offered a home-cooked meal and CHOSE not to eat. As a good mom, you let your children use their agency and then respond appropriately. You would never think of depriving him of such a good opportunity to make decisions for himself! You love him and want to be the best mom for him!

I think you totally did the right thing. You didn't force him not to eat. He chose it. And...it is not as if he didn't eat this morning. He's not starving, but hopefully is learning a good lesson. :)

Good for you. You're a great Mom. We sometimes do that here at our house. It's what on the dinner table or nothing at all. Your choice, but no one is forcing you not to eat. It's all self choice. They get the hang of it sooner or later and like you said, breakfast the next morning is all the more tasty.
Hang in there :)
